Red-tailed Hawks
Scarlett
Name: Because of her dark red color
Date in: 6/30/99
Hatched: Unknown
Gender: Believed to be female
Age at arrival: adult; unknown
Came from: Metcalf, Kentucky (Bird Number 99-148)
Story:
Scarlett was admitted after being hit by a car. She had blood in her mouth and the feathers
on her left wing looked as though they had been crushed. Although she had no broken bones,
her feather shafts were split requiring Scarlett to winter over until new feathers grew in.
After 2 full years we have determined Scarlett has damaged feather follicles and her feathers
have still not grown in correctly. While she is able to fly she cannot fly well enough
to compete against other Red Taileds.
