Lucretia
Name: Because of the creepy sounds she makes
Date in: 6/2/003
Hatched: June 2000
Gender: Female
Age at arrival: Chick
Came from: Southern States Farm Supply in Winchester, KY
Story: Lucretia was one of five Barn Owl chicks brought in to us from a Southern States Farm Supply. The company was renovating their building and found the nest after tearing off the roof. The chicks could not be relocated and could not be left in the building, so they were brought to Raptor Rehab and raised by Artemis, our male Barn Owl and resident foster parent. All of Lucretia’s brothers and sisters were released, but because of a deformed ankle that would burden her in the wild, she was kept and is now a part of our Barn Owl breeding program. Barn owls are a species of special concern in the state of Kentucky and are endangered in Indiana. Lucretia is compatible with our male (and her foster parent) Artemis and they laid their first egg in February 2001. This clutch eventually contained seven eggs, five of which hatched. Eventually the young Barn Owls will be released as pairs with nest boxes all over Kentucky to help bolster wild populations.
