Story:
We received a call from a vet in Bullitt County who had been rehabbing a Turkey Vulture that required conditioning before release. He requested that we come and get the bird to give it flight time in our cages. We agreed, and when we arrived to pick up Kachina, we discovered that she had been kept in a wire cage next to a Doberman and was terrified. Her broken right wing had healed incorrectly, and some surgical wire still remained in the wing. We took her back to RROKI and worked to correct Kachina’s injuries, but she was never able to be released. She was named Penny, then transferred to another rehabber to be used as an education bird. It was with this rehabber that she received the name Kachina. She was returned to RROKI in December of 1999.
