Great Horned Owls
Birdu
Name: His original owner’s niece noticed his droppings and called him "Bird-Doo"
Date in: March 1984
Hatched: March 1984
Gender: Male
Age at arrival: 10 days
Came from: Resthaven Cemetery, Bardstown Road, Jefferson County KY
Story: Birdu fell out of the nest as a tiny chick, and a local rehabber returned him to the nest to be reared by his parents with his sibling. Three days later the nest tree fell over during a storm. The sibling was killed and Birdu’s wing was crushed beyond repair. He was subsequently hand-raised and imprinted because of his injuries and non-releaseability. Since he is an imprint, he hoots frequently when around humans. In the late fall and early winter, which is courtship season for GHOs, he courts almost any human that comes into his vicinity. This courtship includes bowing, hooting, and presenting food to us. In the fall of 1999 his original caretaker, Ann Huck, passed away unexpectedly, and he was transferred to RROKI.
