Released

On Saturday, March 13th, about 7 weeks after RROKI took in a sick Golden Eagle, we celebrated his release back into the skies of Bernheim Forest.

Those of you who have been following the story of the downed Eagle, know that he was found during a Bernheim Forest "Eagle hike."  He had lead poisoning, pesticide poisoning and aspergillosis, a fungal infection in birds.  After being treated for all of these ailments, the Golden Eagle spent some time in a flight cage, getting his strength back for his ultimate release back to Bernheim Forest.

About 100 people came out to witness the Golden's release on the chilly Saturday morning.  After his initial takeoff from the arms of director John Wicker, the Eagle perched high in a tree for a few moments.  It seemed as if everyone held their breath waiting to see what was going to happen next.  The Eagle didn't disappoint.  He stretched his wings and took off away from the crowd.  There was a collective cheer as we all watched him soaring further and further away.  Some people had tears in their eyes.  Others just stood and watched silently.

For the many volunteers who attended the release, it was agreed...this is what volunteering at RROKI is all about.  All of the hours, the hard work, the sweat, and the worry, were paid back when we watched that Eagle take off.

Thanks to everyone who attended, and a special thanks to those who donated their time and their money to help us treat and release bird number 2004-14.
