Red-Shouldered Hawk

Rusty

Name: Because of his coloring
Date in: 9/15/2006
Hatched: Spring 2006
Gender: Male (discovered through DNA testing)
Age at arrival: 1.5 years
Came from: "Return to the Wild" Raptor Rehabilitation & Education Center, Nashville, IN

Story:
Rusty was admitted to Return to the Wild as a downy chick that had been “chewed up and spit out” by a young Labrador retriever. It was not known why he was on the ground to begin with, possibly a storm caused him to fall from the nest. His left eye was damaged and swollen shut, his right elbow, and hock were skinned to the bone. He was so badly injured it was believed he would not live, but with lots of TLC and tube feeding he improved slowly, but dramatically. He is blind in the left eye due to a retinal detachment, but cosmetically perfect. Rusty is fully flighted.
