Story: A. J. was the youngest of five chicks hatched by Artemis and Lucretia in the summer of 2002.  As this was the 3rd clutch from Artemis and Lucretia, Artemis had duties of caring for his mate and the chicks.  This made him unavailable for education, a very important part of the work we do at RROKI.  Since we had captive bred AJ we made the decision to hand raise him and let him take over the duties of his father as our education Barn Owl.  He has proven to be a delight to watch as he grows into an adult owl.  We have watched him make kills on imaginary mice and fly around the room and dive bomb us. He is a very curious bird and will sometimes spend up to an hour sitting on a tank of live mice just watching them.  He also appears to like to watch running water, as when we turn the water on in the sink at Raptor Rehab he flies over and watches whatever we are doing. He was quickly delighting the children of KY with his quizzical looks—all natural behavior for an owl.
