Turkey
Vulture
Aeolus
Name: Means "God of the Wind"
Date in: 6/1/92
Hatched: April/May 1992
Gender: Male
Age at arrival: approx. one month
Came from: Frankfort, Kentucky Game Farm
Story:
He was found by a family in Franklin County who intended to keep him as a pet.
Kentucky State Fish and Wildlife service confiscated him and placed him with
Raptor Rehab of Kentucky. He was already imprinted and therefore not releasable. Aeolus has been with us ever since as an education bird and is affectionately
referred to as "EO". He is known by hundreds of school children and is a
wonderful example of the beauty of a Turkey Vulture.
EO is afraid of all other vultures and is one of the few birds at RROKI that refuses to foster orphaned chicks. We have consulted several books and other rehabers and discovered that captive Turkey Vultures will seldom foster.
Many regard EO as the most intelligent and "crafty" of the birds at RROKI. He is well known for biting volunteers when they try to handle him and ambushing people who enter his flight cage. EO first lulls his victims into a false sense of security by appearing to ignore them, then attacks from behind. He either charges at them from the ground biting or lands on their head and tangles in their hair while biting their ears. His cage bears a plaque that says BEWARE ATTACK BIRD.
