Ferruginous Hawks

Fergus

Name: From a name the bird contest
Date in: March 2006
Hatched: 2001 Captive Bred
Gender: Male DNA tested
Age at arrival: 5 years
Came from: Rehabitat: Dillsburg PA

Story: Fergus was captive bred and sold to an apprentice falconer when he was a very young chick. Apprentices are not allowed to hold any species except Red Tailed Hawks and American Kestrels. That is because those species are fairly easy to man down and not high strung. You must be a General Falconer to  possess the more difficult species such as Ferruginous. The apprentice that had Fergus did such a poor job of training him that it affected him to the degree he could not be flown for falconry, and he could not be released. He was confiscated by the PA Game commission and placed with Rehabitat, a Rehabilitation and Education facility in Dillsburg PA. When Rehabitat decided to scale down the number of birds they had, we were offered Fergus. Since he was such a beautiful and unusual bird we decided to add him to our Educational Ambassadors.

After many months of training he is now a quite well behaved hawk.
